Arsenal's Mathieu Flamini is likely to be out of action for up to three weeks following the groin injury he suffered while playing against Crystal Palace. The 29 year old midfielder will miss out on games against Chelsea and Liverpool and he may even miss out on playing Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United.
Flamini is a key player for Arsenal and has been on outstanding form since he returned to The Gunners in August.
Flamini only managed to play approximately eight minutes of football against Crystal Palace when he was taken off the pitch and replaced be Serge Gnabry. It was later announced that this decision was because Flamini had suffered an injury to his groin.
Speaking about the injury, Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger said: “When we get the (scan) results we will know how long he will be out. It doesn't look like a bad muscle injury but it is his groin."
Groin strains are categorised by shooting pains, stiffness and weakness. They can also result in instability. The best cure for a groin injury is to rest it, but the healing process can be sped up by doing some or all of the following:
- Icing: apply ice to the inside of the thigh to reduce swelling and pain. Repeat this course of action every three to four hours for 20-30 minutes at a time.
- Compression: use tape or elastic bandage to compress the thigh
- Anti-inflammatory painkillers: for those who can take painkillers, then taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug may be of benefit.
- Amino acids: amino acids have been shown to assist in rebuilding muscle, which can be helpful following a strain or tear.
In most cases these treatments will speed up recovery, but not always. If the techniques above haven’t helped and pain is still being experienced after six months, some sufferers may want to consider undergoing surgery. Whilst surgery may fix the issue, it is a last resort. Following surgery not everyone will be able to return to their previous level of activity.
Luckily Flamini appears to only have suffered a relatively minor groin strain injury. So after sufficient rest and recuperation, as well as following the close advice of the medical professionals assisting him, it looks as though The Gunners will have the Frenchman back on the pitch in a few weeks.
