Premier League giants Liverpool are said to be favourites to sign the highly-rated Barcelona defender Martin Montoya.
The Mirror reports that the club's managing director Ian Ayre has made the trip to Catalonia to open talks for a potential January transfer for the centre-back.
The talented youngster will become a free agent when his current contract expires at the end of the season, but the Reds manager Brendan Rodgers os keen on acquiring his services as soon as possible, as he is in urgent need of back-up after losing Jose Enrique for the rest of the campaign through injury.
High flying Arsenal and Inter Milan have also been associated with a switch for Montoya in the past.
