Arsenal join race to sign Borussia Dortmund star IIkay Gundogan

Arsenal have joined the race to sign Borussia Dortmund IIkay Gundogan in the winter transfer window, following speculation regarding the player's contract extension with the Bundesliga outfit.

  • The 23-year-old German international, has been a key member for the Bundesliga outfit in recent seasons, but is yet to agree a new contract extension with the club.



    The uncertainty brought in by the club's higher officials on whether the talented midfielder would extend his stay beyond his current deal , has attracted interest from several top clubs in Europe for his signature, including Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.



    When asked upon IIkay Gundogan's contract extension, the club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke quipped : “It is our absolute desire that besides Robert Lewandowski no other regular player leaves the club.



    “Only in the case of Ilkay Gundogan, we do not yet know how it will turn out. We would love to extend (a contract) with him.”



    IIkay Gundogan, whose current contract expires in June 2015, joined the BVB from FC Nurnberg in 2011.
