McClaren thanks Israel

McClaren thanks Israel

18 November 2007 - 17:07

England boss Steve McClaren has openly thanked Israel for beating Russia on Saturday night. McClaren is thankful to have the situation back in their hands as they look forward to Wednesday's crunch qualifier with Croatia.

  • Chelsea planning shock move for Man City winger?
  • Arsenal handed injury boost on defender ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • The Three Lions’ situation looked gloomy prior to Israel taking on Russia in Tel Aviv in the Euro qualifier, but a 2-1 win for the home side have left McClaren’s side needing a point from the final game against Croatia on Wednesday at Wembley.

McClaren, who has been under increasing pressure with many suggesting he would be sacked if the Three Lions do not make it to their first major finals since 1994, said: "What a night! Absolutely fantastic news for us all. I'd like to pay tribute to Israel for the professional way they went about their job - they showed what a proud nation they are and deserve a lot of praise for their efforts.

"I've said several times over the past few weeks that the campaign was never over until it was over and that I always believed it would come down to the Croatia match - thankfully it has."
