Santander to boycott Copa clash?

28 January 2014 - 10:57

Spanish second division team Racing Santander’s players have confirmed that they will boycott their Copa Del Rey game against Real Sociedad unless the board resigns.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Racing captain Mario Fernandez announced the decision on the training ground in a statement asking for President Angel Lavin to resign before the game or the players will not take to the pitch.

“If the board does not resign in the next few hours, the squad here announces its irrevocable refusal to compete in our next game in the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey,” he told the media.”

Racing players have not been paid for months after several promises from the club that they indeed would be paid. The lack of payments have caused difficult financial situation for the players who have in turn requested for contract resolutions.

The club president was also attacked by the fans during the first leg of the clash with Real Sociedad because of his handling of the club.
