Jara to Mainz deal confirmed

16 July 2014 - 14:31

Chile defender Gonzalo Jara has joined Mainz on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal with the German club.

  • Arsenal linked with new shotstopper as backup to Raya
  • Juventus and Roma to battle for 20yo Arsenal star

  • Jara has spent the past five years in England, representing West Brom, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Nottingham Forest.

He missed the decisive penalty as his country exited the recently concluded World Cup at the hands of hosts Brazil in the last 16.

However, after being released by Championship side Forest, the 28-year-old defender will now continue his career in Bundesliga.

Mainz is preparing to feature in the UEFA Europa League after finishing at seventh-placed finish last season.

"He's a versatile player and fits the bill perfectly. He's industrious, a good tackler, technically strong, good in the build-up and a real team player," said Mainz' coach Kasper Hjulmand.

Jara's contract includes an option for a further year and he is excited by the opportunity that awaits him.

"Having played in England for many years I am now very much looking forward to the challenge that is the Bundesliga," the Chile international said.
