Celtic make the last 16

04 December 2007 - 21:44

Celtic have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday despite a Filippo Inzaghi goal in the 70th minute at the San Siro gave them a 1-0 loss to Milan. Celtic initially needed to get a point away at the European Champions, but Benfica remarkably defeated Shakhtar Donetsk to help the Scots through.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • The game was a quiet one played in a half full San Siro, and the first shot on target didn't arrive until the 38th minute.

Milan threatened to break the deadlock shortly before half-time with Giuseppe Favalli's penetrating pass serving Clarence Seedorf inside the penalty area, only for the Dutch midfielder to blaze his angled shot high over the crossbar.

Scott Brown had a glorious chance to put his side in front, but slashed wide. There was more worry for Brown, who will now miss the next game after picking up a suspension through another booking.

Inzaghi got the winner in the 70th minute as Cafu raced into the penalty box and cut the ball back for Inzaghi to tuck a low shot home from five yards.

He had broken Gerd Muller's goalscoring record taking his tally to 63 in all UEFA competitions.

Benfica's victory at Shakhtar Donetsk ensured Gordon Strachan's side progress to the knockout phase for the second year running.
