Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has been handed an eight-match ban by the Spanish Football Federation, for making contact with a match official during his side’s 1-0 victory against Real Madrid in their Spanish Super Cup match on Friday.
The Argentine manger was sent off during the second leg at the Vicente Calderon after he got into a spat with the match officials at the touchline. He then tapped the assistant referee at the back of his head and applauded before heading out of the dugout.
The 44-year-old’s suspension is comprised of four different punishments and also includes a fine of £3,800.
He received a two-match ban for aggressive protesting, a four-match ban for striking the official, a one-match ban for applauding at the decision, and another one for lingering on at the touchline instead of leaving after being sent-off.
The club has also been fined with £2,230 for the manager’s actions.
The Red and Whites’ assistant coach German Burgos will now take over the reins for the period of the suspension, as Simeone is set to miss the reigning champions’ La Liga games against Rayo Vallecano, Eibar, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo. He will serve the rest of his suspension during the Supercopa.
