Reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are ready to step up their pursuit for Manchester United's Juan Mata in January.
The Spain international is believed to be on the fringes of the first-team at the Red Devils, with manager Louis van Gaal keen on picking loan signing Radamel Falcao ahead of him in the pecking order.
In spite of playing during the weekend, Mata is well aware that his opportunites will be limited once the squad comes back to full strength, and this is likely to send him back to the bench sooner rather than later.
According to The Mail, Atletico are ready to rival Valencia by making a bid of their own for the talented midfielder.
United are currently fourth in the league standings.
