Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signing of FC Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to Metro.

The Gunners have been monitoring the Swiss international for the past few months, with manager Arsene Wenger keen on signing a top-class defender in the upcoming transfer window.

The Metro reports that the North London outfit are readying a bid of around £9.5m for the talented centre-back in the New Year.

Arsenal host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
