Boxing Day Premiership

Boxing Day Premiership

25 December 2007 - 00:14

With Arsenal keen to keep on top of the league into the new year, they face a tough looking trip down south to Portsmouth. Chelsea host Aston Villa, whilst the match of the day could be Birmingham vs Middlesbrough in a relegation battle.

  • Chelsea agree personal terms with Messinho
  • Arsenal goalkeeper expected to leave permanently

  • Tottenham take on Fulham and Spurs will be keen to build on their excellent performance against Arsenal at the Emirates with an important home win. They are showing huge improvement under Juande Ramos.

Meanwhile, Wigan play Newcastle with Sam Allardyce under enormous pressure. Newcastle must get a win here after Allardyce's shocking result against Derby last week.

Birmingham's hosting of Middlesbrough has the look of a relegation 'six-pointer' and should be the match of the day. An excellent opportunity for both sides to really help push them out of the relegation zone.

The surprise of Boxing Day could come the way of Liverpool, who face Derby at Pride Park. Derby have shown some good football recently, and the unfortunate late 2-2 draw with Newcastle broke their hearts, but amazing progress could be made with a win against Liverpool.

Man Utd take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and again this could be a tough one for United as Sir Alex takes on his old captain Roy Keane.

Finally, West Ham against Reading has all the makings of a great battle as long as both teams keep up their good form.
