Manchester United are believed to have made an approach to sign French defender Rafael Varane in a deal which would see David de Gea move to Real Madrid.
De Gea is expected to seal his move to the Bernabeu in the upcoming transfer window, and United will look to bring in a suitable replacement.
However, it is understood that United who had earlier rejected a bid of £13m from Los Blancos, enquired on whether they could sign Varane in a player-plus-cash deal for the Spain international.
Real Madrid have swiftly rejected the offer, and will come up a renewed bid for De Gea.
