Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that summer signing Matteo Darmian will play as second-choice to Antonio Valencia in the upcoming season.
It had been expected the Italy international would take over the right-back role from Valencia following his summer move from Torino.
However, speaking in San Jose, Van Gaal revealed that the 25-year-old was signed to provide ample support to first-choice full-back Valencia.
"We have brought Darmian for the second position behind Valencia and now already because of that injury [Paddy] McNair has to play there." he told reporters.
