Evertons new stadium plans

Everton's new stadium plans

03 January 2008 - 13:09

Everton may soon be building their new stadium away from Goodison Park at Kirkby this year. The joint venture between Everton and Tesco to build a leisure centre near the stadium is soon to go under way.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Man Utd serious about signing Rafael Leao
  • Work on Everton’s proposed £150m stadium may begin this year after the club submitted a formal planning application for the controversial relocation to Kirkby.

That outcome, however, rests on the project gaining approval from Knowsley plus the government, which could “call in” the plans amid concern about their impact on surrounding areas. Kirkby residents have already staged several protests and it was significant that yesterday’s planning application included £10m of road improvement work, one of the main issues of contention with locals and the Knowsley North MP, George Howarth.

Everton and the supermarket’s application is for a 50,000-seat stadium, a 24-hour Tesco Extra store and 50 high street shops. It also includes an outline application for a hotel, plus commercial and leisure facilities in the town centre
