Chelsea are understood to have failed with a deadline day bid for Benfica defender Luisao, according to reports.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho was believed to be desperate to sign a new central defender following the club's failure to land Everton's John Stones.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo now claims that the Premier League holders had a bid rebuffed for 34-year-old Luisao.
However, Mourinho's side did make efforts elsewhere and snapped up centre-backs Michael Hector and Papy Djilobodji on Tuesday.
