Liverpool will reportedly considering re-signing Xabi Alonso once his contract at Bayern Munich expires next summer.
The Spain international has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer in recent weeks following reports that Bayern are not prepared to offer a fresh deal.
However, Italian publication Tuttomercato cites that the Reds may lodge a surprise move to bring Alonso back to Anfield.
It is added that the 33-year-old could get a pre-contract agreement done as he is free to talks to foreign clubs in the New Year.
Alonso is a fans favourite at Liverpool, having won the Champions League and FA Cup during a five-year spell.
