Manchester United have announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club's new head coach. The 53-year-old had been tipped to take over the reigns at Old Trafford after his former Barcelona mentor Louis van Gaal was relieved from his duties earlier this week.

  • It is known that the 'Special One' has negotiated a three-year deal at the Red Devils, with an additional season should he impress during his stay.

"To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match," he told the club's official website.

"I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I'm looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years."

Mourinho's first focus will be on the transfer window with the club willing to offer a £200m kitty to bolster the spine of the squad ahead of next season.
