André Gomes seals Barcelona move

27 July 2016 - 11:33

Andre Gomes has completed a medical and sealed his switch from Valencia to FC Barcelona, in a deal which could see the Spanish champions pay up to €70 million for the Portuguese midfielder.

  • Gomes completed a medical in Barcelona today and was presented to Barca fans at an unveiling ceremony at their B team's Mini Estadi ground.

The 22-year-old playmaker could end up costing Barcelona as much as €70 million if a series of conditional clauses are met. The deal that saw the Portuguese swap the Mestalla for the Camp Nou will cost Barcelona an initial fee of €35 million, with add-ons potentially taking the deal up to €55 million, then Valencia will receive a further €15 million if Gomes wins the Ballon d'Or at some point in his time with the Blaugrana.

Gomes was thought to be on the verge of a move to Real Madrid, with the European champions believed to be just hours away from capturing the young Portugal international's signature, only for rivals Barca to swoop in and steal him away from the Bernabéu club.

Gomes took part in the recent UEFA Europen Championship in France this summer, featuring regularly as a starter during the group stage, only to lose his place to Bayern Munich's teenage sensation Renato Sanchez, as the Cristiano Ronaldo captained side went on to complete and unlikely triumph by beating the host nation in the final.
