Former Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has agreed personal terms ahead of his proposed move to AS Roma. The Belgian has opted for a fresh challenge after he struggled for playing time at Barcelona.
The 30-year-old has appeared in just 11 league games for Barca since his switch from the Emirates Stadium in 2014.
Recent reports suggested that Vermaelen could make a surprise return to the Gunners, but according to Tuttosport, the player is nearing a move to the Giallorossi after they settled on an initial loan deal.
Barca are currently holding out on a £9m future fee, but Roma are confident of negotiating a lesser sum before finalizing the move.
Vermaelen was part of Marc Wilmots' side which lost out to Wales in the quarter-final stage of the European championships.
