  • Journalist Duncan Castles, who is known to have close contacts within José Mourinho’s entourage, is reporting today in the Scottish Daily Record that AS Monaco are interested in signing Argentinian defender Marcos Rojo from Manchester United.

The player is said to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford this season, with the Red Devils willing to offload the defender if they receive an offer in the region of £12 million for the 2014 World Cup finalist.

However, it is believed that Rojo is reluctant to leave United at this time, and his wages could prove prohibitive to any deal, as prospective buyers are unlikely to be willing to match the figures he received under his current contract.

Rojo signed for United from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £16 million in the summer of 2014 following some impressive performances at that year’s World Cup in Brazil.

But Rojo has struggled to hold down a regular place in the United line up, and his inconsistent performances have led him to be considered as being below the level required of a Red Devils player.

United are also interested in signing Monaco’s Brazilian full-back Fabinho, so the 20 time English champions may try to parlay the French club’s interest in Rojo into a player plus cash deal for Fabinho.
