Wayne Rooney is being monitored by a host of Major League Soccer team owners, and the Manchester United striker would likely receive a huge offer to play his football in the USA once he decides to call time on his Manchester United career.
Portland Timbers owner Merrit Paulson has stated that many MLS franchises are keeping tabs on Rooney’s career, and would love to take the England captain across the Atlantic to finish his playing days in MLS.
“I think he would be a great signing for MLS - 100 per cent MSL would be attractive for him,” Paulson said.
Rooney has started both of Manchester United’s Premier League games so far this season as well as the Community Shield victory over Leicester at Wembley earlier in the month.
But the 30-year-old has come in for some criticism in recent months, with many observers feeling that his best days are behind him, and that he should not be considered a first choice option for United going forward.
And Rooney’s displays for England at the recent UEFA European Championship in France did little to convince his doubters that he is not on the decline, as he played in midfield for the Three Lions, who crashed out in the last 16 thanks to a shocking 2-1 defeat to Iceland.
Rooney is only four goals shy of becoming United’s all-time leading goal scorer, eclipsing the mark set by Sir Bobby Charlton.
