Manchester United have removed a plaque commemorating legendary manager Sir Matt Busby from the directors’ box at Old Trafford, according to reports.

  • The Manchester Evening News is reporting that a plaque commemorating the achievements of former Red Devils boss from the directors’ box at Old Trafford.

The club have also informed Busby’s grandchildren that they will no longer be allowed entrance into the executive suite at the stadium.

Busby’s family have been allowed entrance into the executive suite for more than 40 years, with four tickets for the directors’ box for every game, but the United hierarchy have decided that that should no longer be the case.

The former manager’s family still have season tickets at the club, and have expressed their gratitude at being afforded such privileges for so long.

But the club’s removal of the plaque and the shunning of the Busby family has caused consternation among United fans who feel that the club is disrespecting the legacy one of the Old Trafford club’s greatest heroes.

Busby, who played for United’s bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool during his playing career, was boss at old Trafford from 1945 to 1969, and briefly returned as manager in 1971.

Busby won three first division titles with a young side nicknamed the ‘Busby Babes’. But the 1958 Munich Air Disaster decimated his squad.

Seven of his players were killed in the plane crash, with Busby himself read his last rites before eventually recovering from his injuries.

The Scot remarkably rebuilt his team, and took them to European Cup glory in 1968.

Manchester United are yet to comment on why Busby’s plaque has been removed and his family’s privileges have been taken away.
