  • The veteran midfielder had suggested in June that he had only signed a one-year extension after Mourinho promised him playing time.

According to The Mail, the Magpies were looking to re-sign Carrick, who left Tyneside at just 16, and the out-of-contract midfielder would have moved to the Championship, had it not been for the Special One.

The ex-Chelsea boss believed the player had an influential role to play at Old Trafford, and this urged the anchorman to commit his future for the ongoing campaign.

Carrick has since made a solitary start for United in the EFL Cup, but they have been calls for him to play alongside Paul Pogba in midfield this season.
