Nigeria save Vogts blushes

29 January 2008 - 18:57

Nigeria have gone through to the quarter final's of the African Nations by beating Benin 2-0, and Mali losing 3-0 to Ivory Coast.

  • Chelsea expected to sell striker after loan deal
  • Arsenal defender misses training ahead of Man Utd game

  • A tense game was finally won by premiership starts Obi Mikel and Yakubu Aiyegbeni.

The deadlock was broken 9 minutes in the second half after Benin keeper Yoann Djidonou could only parry Taye Taiwo shot and seconds later Mikel from six yards headed the ball home.

With minutes remaining Yakubu who had been ineffective most of the game latched onto an Obi Mikel pass to slot the ball cooly into the back of the net.

Nigeria are through but they will have to improve a lot more to stand a chance of winning the African Nations as their performaces have been well below what is expected of them.
