Middlesbrough to sign Iago Aspas at end of season?

15 February 2017 - 12:16

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka is considering a move for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas at the end of the current campaign. Reports from Spain suggest that Boro will pay around 14 million euros for Iago Aspas at the end of the current campaign; but only if Middlesbrough retain their Premier League status.

  • Middlesbrough scouts have been monitoring Iago Aspas in action since November last year and have been impressed with the recent performances of the former Liverpool player. Aspas famously spent one campaign at Anfield before being allowed to return to Spain on loan to Sevilla and then finally ending up at current club Celta Vigo for a second spell.

Iago Aspas appeared for Spain's national team in 2016 and scored on his debut, against England at Wembley Stadium.

Aspas has also been linked with a move to other Spanish teams, with Malaga and Villarreal also rumoured to have shown interest. Both teams have reportedly been in contact with the player and his agent in recent months with regards to a transfer at the end of the current La Liga campaign.

Aitor Karanka, the Middlesbrough boss, has been promised funds of around £35 million if he manages to keep the Riverside club in the Premier League this season. His top priority will be to invest in his forward line in the summer, despite the decent form of fellow Spaniard Alvaro Negredo. Karanka believes that Iago Aspas will in fact compliment the good form of striker Negredo for next season.

Aspas has two and a half years remaining on his deal with Celta Vigo and the Spanish side are known to be unhappy that other teams are unsettling the loyal forward who recently committed his long term future to the club in the press. However, Aspas will of course still feel that he has a point to prove in the Premier League.

Aspas will no doubt be concerned that his last stay in the Premier League could be described as a disaster. Liverpool were quick to ship the forward off to another club despite taking a hefty initial investment in the player. His agent however has reportedly told him that the time is now or never for a lucrative move abroad and Boro manager Karanka is a huge fan of his fellow countryman.
