Arsenal, Spurs to fight it out for Schalke midfielder

North London duo Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly go head-to-head in the pursuit of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka this summer.

  • The Germany international is currently approaching the final year of his Schalke contract, and he is more or less likely to be sold in the coming transfer window.

Goretzka, who is a box-to-box midfielder by trade, has formed an excellent partnership alongside Nabil Bentaleb - formerly of Spurs, this season, and this has attracted interest from scouts across Europe.

The north London pair are not alone in the chase for the player with Serie A holders Juventus also keeping an eye on the midfield anchorman.

The 22-year-old has been reluctant to pen terms over a fresh deal, and Schalke are expecting to offload him this summer rather than losing him for nothing at the end of next season.

Goretzka is currently valued at a bargain price of around £16m, and the Premier League giants will be hoping to get hold of his services with both need of further additions at the centre of the park.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently placed second in the league standings while arch-rivals Arsenal find themselves in sixth place following a run of four defeats in five outings.
