Chopra sinks Tottenham

Chopra sinks Tottenham

11 August 2007 - 16:28

Ex-Newcastle striker Michael Chopra gave Sunderland a dream return to the Premiership after netting a 93rd minute winner. Tottenham have been tipped for success this season, and will not be happy with this start.

  • Chelsea want to sign Lyon star to replace Jadon Sancho
  • Arsenal want to bring Aymeric Laporte back to England

  • Only Chelsea have spent more than Tottenham in recent years, and their expensive signings were largely outplayed today. The Premiership newcomers Sunderland impressed in their first game of the season.

The first half displayed very little action apart from a few nice touches from Dimitar Berbatov whilst Robbie Keane was rather quiet today. Sunderland looked weak up front and Anthony Stokes was often caught in possession.

Chopra, making his debut for the Black Cats, had been brought on on 71 minutes for the ineffective Stokes. Spurs' strikers struggled as the impressive Sunderland defender Paul McShane kept Berbatov at bay for the whole game.

As the game went into injury time, the tempo was really raised and only minutes before the end Robinson was tested by Richardson and Chopra. However, Chopra knocked the ball home after a cross from Ross Wallace to send the home ground into raptures. It was the perfect start to Sunderland's Premiership campaign.
