Tottenham Hotspur continued to chase down Chelsea for the Premier League title on Sunday, and at the same time guaranteed that they would finish above bitter North London rivals Arsenal for the first time in over twenty years.
After Chelsea's victory earlier in the day, Tottenham went into Sunday afternoon's home match against Arsenal knowing that victory would cut the gap at the top again to four points. With the news this week that Spurs would play their home games at Wembley next season due to stadium redevelopment, Tottenham were determined to win the last North London derby at White Hart Lane as we know it.
The game was goalless at half time, and then a two minute period decided the result of the match. Ten minutes after the interval, one of Tottenham's stand out stars this season, Dele Alli broke the deadlock from close range. Things got even worse for Arsenal moments later, when Gabriel brought down Harry Kane in the area. Kane got up and converted from the spot to keep their fantastic run of form going.
This is Tottenham's ninth consecutive victory in the Premier League, their best run of form since 1960. If Chelsea slip up in their final few games, Spurs are doing their best to assure that they will be their to make the most of it. Tottenham have also assured that they will finish above Arsenal in the league for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
For Arsenal, their quest for a top four finish is looking more and more difficult. They do have one more game to play than the teams above them, but with five games to go, they are currently six points behind Manchester City who sit fourth.
