Upamecano on Reds radar

Not Keita, Jurgen Klopp keen on signing another RB Leipzig ace

23 September 2017 - 10:58

Liverpool are reportedly holding a keen interest in signing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano during the winter transfer window.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • The teenage centre-back joined the Bundesliga high-flyers from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in January 2017, and he has since managed 15 league appearances.

Upamecano is already on the radar of several European clubs, and according to Bild, the 18-year-old has been identified as a potential January target for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

The Reds placed their emphasis on signing Southampton's Virgil van Dijk in the summer but backed down after the Saints lodged an official complaint against them over an illegal approach.

Liverpool have shipped in nine goals in just five league games this term, and Klopp has been criticised for the failure to reinforce the backline.

The Merseyside giants have already wrapped up an agreement with Leipzig to sign Naby Keita next summer, but this will not ease their pursuit of Upamecano, who is in line for a contract extension.

Leipzig are planning to double the wages of the talented central defender whilst inserting a release clause worth £88m on an improved deal.
