Manchester United target Leicester defender as part of summer rebuild

Manchester United are reported to be showing interest in signing Leicester City and England defender Harry Maguire as part of their summer spending as they attempt to rebuild their squad and mount a serious Premier League challenge against Manchester City next season, who were crowned champions on Sunday.

  • 25-year-old Maguire has impressed for The Foxes this season since joining from relegated Hull City in the summer for a £17 million fee, but he could be on the move again at the end of the season with The Red Devils interested.

The centre-back is certainly in contention for a place in England's World Cup squad in the coming months and he will be hoping to play a key role in any success that Gareth Southgate's side has in Russia.

If Harry Maguire does make the move to Old Trafford to join Jose Mourinho's team, it is likely that another England defender, Chris Smalling, will be on his way out of the club.

Smalling, who was an England regular but now finds his place in the squad in doubt, could, therefore, be hit by a double blow of missing out to Harry Maguire, for both his club and his country.

Mourinho is also believed to be interested in the defensive talents of Real Madrid's Raphael Varane and Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos, however, they would almost certainly require a larger transfer and lack the Premier League experience that Maguire possesses, meaning that the Leicester man could be the one who makes the move to Manchester.
