Mourinho hints at Fellaini extension

Jose Mourinho speaks on Fellaini's future after Arsenal win

29 April 2018 - 19:07

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has cited that Marouane Fellaini is close to earning a new long-term contract with the club.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • The Belgium international has been a contract standoff over the past 12 months and this has spread talk of him leaving on a free transfer in June with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus interested.

Despite this, Fellaini has remained a crucial player under Mourinho and the Belgian came off the bench to score a dramatic winner in the 2-1 triumph over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho highlighted the midfielder's love for the club and hinted that a deal is likely to be finalised soon, he told BBC Sport:

"I think a player that grabs the crest after scoring is telling clearly that he wants to stay. I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay, I think he will stay, it is nearly there."

Fellaini has been in-and-out of the United first-team through injuries but the Belgian now appears set to be rewarded with a long-term contract which should include a significant payrise.
