Roberto Martinez reacts to third place win over England

14 July 2018 - 16:56

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has said that his players deserve their third place finish after a two nil win over England in the third place play-off.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard ensured that the Belgians had a winning end to an amazing tournament.

Speaking on ITV, the former Everton boss said: "It's all about the achievement, this is Belgium's best finish at a World Cup. The players deserve that and they wanted to make the country proud."

Prior to this tournament, Martinez's side were one of the favourites to win it with their array of stars, but despite not winning it, they have really given a good account of themselves.

For Belgium, attention will now turn to the qualifiers for Euro 2020. It is expected that Hazard and company will be able to qualify for the tournament, and when they get there, few teams will be able to stop them if they don't go the way of Germany at this year's World Cup.
