Tottenham agree deal for Barrios, fee around €23 million

Tottenham Hotspur remain keen on Colombia international defensive midfielder Wilmar Barrios and have an agreement to sign him in January, according to Argentine journalist Luis Fregossi. The reporter claims that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is a long-time admirer of the 25-year-old, who currently plays for Boca Juniors.

  • There were several claims made in the summer regarding Barrios’ future, including that Tottenham were in line to bring the player to England, but also that Everton were interested and in pole position.

No deal for a transfer at the time was done, and Spurs eventually ended the summer transfer window without making any permanent signings. Fregossi claims that Tottenham have made an agreement with Boca to sign Barrios in January and can expect to pay around €23 million (£20.3 million) for his services.

Amid criticism for their lack of summer transfer dealings, Spurs have reiterated that Pochettino is committed to a policy of only signing the players he wants and those that the club needs.

If the Barrios reports are true, he has clearly identified the Colombian – who can also play as wide midfielder if required – as someone who can boost the quality of his squad. He would certainly add depth to the defensive midfield, where Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are currently his main options.

With Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko now past and approaching 30 respectively, bringing in younger players to give him more alternatives in the middle of the park is a sensible approach.

Barrios has been ever present for Boca this season having moved from Deportes Tolima in his home country in 2016. If he were to arrive in North London early next year he would become only the second Colombian to feature for Spurs after Davinson Sanchez.
