Houssem Aouar

Aouar: the next Zidane?

Houssem Aouar

16 January 2019 - 00:31

French-Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar is considered one of Europe's best young attacking talents. The Lyon star's hero is fellow French-Algerian footballer Zinedine Zidane, and for many Aouar has modelled himself as a player on the French World Cup winning legend.

  • Aouar is arguably one of the best up and coming talents in world football today. Aged 20 at the time of writing, Aouar forced his way into Lyon's first team in 2017 and has since gone on to be an almost ever-present for the Ligue 1 side.

Houssem came through the ranks at his hometown club Lyon at the age of 11, and signed his first professional contract with the club in 2016. Since then, it has been onward and upward for the youngster, even being nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2018.

Aouar demonstrates incredible calmness with the ball at his feet for such a young age. He also is an extremely gifted passer of the ball, with impeccable range. Comfortable in possession and also dribbling, Aouar often plays as a deep lying playmaker for Lyon, from where he can start and create many opportunities from the midfield.

Aouar took the number 8 shirt from Corentin Tolisso last season, and also in honour of another hero of his own, club legend Juninho. Aouar could rightly become a club legend himself if he continues to receive the first-team opportunity gifted to him at the club so far.

International recognition will likely come sooner than later, despite Aouar having fierce competition for a place in France's first team.

Arguably one of the planet's best young footballers.
