Former Arsenal player Marc Overmars had been expected to join the Gunners as a technical directory but sensationally decided to stay put with Ajax Amsterdam. Overmars has put pen to paper on a new contract with the Dutch club.
After the departure of Sven Mislintat, there had been rumours that either Spaniard Monchi or Overmars would move to the Emirates, but instead Overmars decided to sign a brand new contract.
Speaking to reporters, Overmars quipped: "There are still plenty of challenges at Ajax and I'm having a good time here,"
"We are taking steps with both the youth academy and the first team.
"From a sporting point of view, we still want to show a lot. What is also important to me, is that it is nice to work with the people around me.
"I get pleasure and satisfaction from that."
Overmars has doubled his salary with his new contract and is no longer expected to make a move to Arsenal, leaving the Gunners with a few other options, one of which is believed to be Lille director Luis Campos.
Monchi, who had departed Roma for his old club Sevilla, had a strong relationship with Arsenal manager Unai Emery but ultimately decided to move back to Spain.
