Arsenal have entered the race to sign Argentinian defender Walter Kannemann. The player, 28, is currently at Gremio in Brazil and is the subject of a £15 million move rumour.

  • It is understood that Arsenal will go head to head with Spanish duo Valencia and Atletico Madrid in a move for Kannemann, with Atleti rumoured to be in pole position to secure a deal for Kannemann as their coach Diego Simeone is a legend in Argentina and had previously worked with the defender at San Lorenzo.

Disappointing defensive performances at the Emirates this season have seen the club's scouting network been given a new priority - to sign a world-class centre-back this summer - and the move for Kannemann may be off the mark but certainly will add desperately needed mettle to the Gunners' defensive lines.

Shkrodan Mustafi has endured a disappointing season but the return of Laurent Koscielny has helped Arsenal's recent resurgence in form, seeing the Gunners move up to fourth place in the Premier League.
