Chelsea have decided to decline the option to sign Gonzalo Higuain on a permanent basis from Juventus after the striker's average showing with the club.

  • The Blues landed the signature of the 31-year-old on a short-term deal in January shortly after Alvaro Morata was permitted to return to Spain with Atletico Madrid.

However, he has since struggled to make a strong impact with just three goals from 13 appearances and he has been overlooked for selection in the starting lineup of late.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Blues are likely to end Higuain's time with the club in the summer with the Argentine failing to sufficiently impress in the frontline.

Higuain has previously expressed his desire to stay put with the west London giants but his prospect of doing the same remain bleak unless he can better his scoring record by the end of the campaign.

The former AC Milan loanee could feature against Burnley in the Premier League on Monday night. The game remains a must-win for the Blues, who are aiming to finish in the top four.
