Ed Woodward admits signing Alexis Sanchez for Manchester United was a mistake

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly admitted in private that he made the wrong choice to pursue Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal last year.

  • The Chilean was tipped to sign for arch-rivals Manchester City from Arsenal in January 2018, but the Red Devils convinced him to join them with a bumper £500,000-a-week salary, while the Gunners received Henrikh Mkhitaryan in exchange.

Since then, Sanchez has struggled to make any meaningful impact at Old Trafford and his tally of five goals from 42 matches has produced plenty of criticism from the club's faithful.

According to The Times, Woodward is said to have acknowledged in a private meeting that he made a big mistake to tempt Sanchez to join the club on such a lucrative deal.

The same outlet suggests that United are considering the potential sale of the Chilean in the summer as they seek to recoup funds to bolster their summer transfer kitty.

Sanchez has recently returned to the first-team fray after overcoming a knee injury. He was an unused substitute during United's embarrassing 4-0 defeat at Everton at the weekend.
