Matthijs De Ligt completes Juventus transfer

19 July 2019 - 02:35

Juventus have captured Dutch international defender Matthijs De Ligt in a transfer worth up to 75 million euros. The centre-back is considered one of Europe's best young players, with Juve beating Man Utd to his signature.

  • De Ligt has signed a long-term contract in Turin with Maurizio Sarri's side and the youngster has rejected a move to the Premier League, instead opting for a transfer to Italy as the next step in his career.

De Ligt has cemented himself in Ajax history having helped captain the club to last year's Champions League semi-final.

Juventus have beaten Man Utd in signing De Ligt, with both teams having matched Ajax's transfer valuation.

"I have been fascinated by the Italian way of defending from an early age," the 19-year-old Ajax's official website after agreeing a move to Juve.

"Many of my idols from the past are also Italians. Such as [Paolo] Maldini, [Franco] Baresi, [Alessandro] Nesta, [Fabio] Cannavaro and [Gaetano] Scirea. I actually fell in love with the Italian way of defending and I made a choice based on that."
