Javier Hernandez explains reasons for Hammers departure

05 September 2019 - 12:25

Mexico international striker Javier Hernandez has explained he has taken a pay cut to join Sevilla in La Liga. West Ham decided to sell the forward after the player had been considered surplus to requirements at the London Stadium this summer.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • It is understood that Hernandez had earned upwards of £140,000 per week with the Hammers, and took a significant paycut down to £80,000 per week to move to Spain.

Hernandez quipped: "I have just turned 31, and I feel ready, with the mix of all the experience I have already had.

"This is my tenth season in Europe and what better way to fulfil it than in this club. Monchi [Sevilla's sporting director] was the one who called me, we talked, and he basically asked me if I would be interested in going to Sevilla.

"I think when they ask you that, you don't doubt it and I said 'yes, of course'. I told him that if I didn't go to Sevilla, I was not going to leave the club (West Ham)."
