Davide Zappacosta could reportedly return to Chelsea in the coming days after sustaining a serious knee injury during a training session with loan club AS Roma.

  • Chelsea ready new contract for star midfielder
  • Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso
  • The Italy international joined the Giallorossi on a short-term loan deal during the summer and he was expected to remain with the Serie A side until the turn of the year at least.

However, it seems that his season is more or less finished after he damaged his cruciate knee ligaments in a training session on Friday for which he has already undergone a surgery.

According to Sky Italia, the versatile defender is now expected to return to his parent club ahead of schedule in order to follow up with the necessary recovery procedure.

Zappacosta has managed just 12 minutes of action for the Giallorossi this season and he was previously sidelined with a calf injury for more than a month. He has more than two years remaining on his current Blues deal.
