Liverpool boss hints that there may be no transfer funds

21 July 2020 - 15:38

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has surprised the media today after informing the press that there may not be transfer funds available to strengthen the club's squad this summer. Liverpool have been linked with a  host of top names but have yet to have confirmed any transfer arrivals, despite bitter rivals Chelsea having completed a handful of deals.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Chelsea have signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and are closing in on a mega-money deal to sign Kai Havertz, leaving Liverpool short of their rivals in terms of strength in depth. It is understood that Liverpool are looking to sign a centre-back and possibly a backup central midfielder this summer, but will not spend big in order to secure new players.

Liverpool's odds are still massively positioned as favourites for the next season according to Olybet.eu, but Chelsea aren't far behind.

Liverpool famously have one of the best scouting networks in the country and are about to benefit from an enormous £80 million cash impetus soon, as well as prize money from winning the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp is looking to replace James Milner this summer, with the versatile player's age soon becoming an issue.

Klopp quipped: “I am happy with my squad 100 percent. I was last year when people wanted us to sign him and him. It’s not that we don’t want, we try to make the right decisions and then COVID came. The situation changed and not for the better.

“It’s not that we don’t think we cannot improve with transfers, we just do what we can and cannot. The main difference with us this year was consistency. We won against Chelsea away and now they are how many points behind?

“There’s not a 30-point gap to Chelsea – you can see that on the pitch. Our boys put everything into it, I’m not sure you can buy that.

“We had to build this and that took time. It is not about spending, it is about having the right team in the right situation. We can buy if we have the money and the need. If one of these is not there, we will not. It’s not an excuse.

“We got 97 points last season and who did I bring in for the one point gap to City? We didn’t because we didn’t and we saw what happened. There will be lot of tests next year and we have to be ready. Some are decided in the transfer market but not all of them.”
