Chelsea have reportedly joined Manchester City in the race to sign Jose Gimenez during this summer's transfer window.
The Uruguayan has been with Atletico Madrid since the summer of 2013 and over the past seven years, he has registered 190 appearances across all competitions.
A number of minor injuries have contributed to his reduced playing time, but he is still regarded as one of the best defenders in the Spanish La Liga when fit.
According to The Telegraph, the Blues have been keeping a close watch on the South American ace as they consider improving their defence ahead of next season.
Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in the former Danube youngster, but the duo would need to break the bank for the player, given Atletico's reluctance to negotiate.
The Spanish club are holding out for the player's £109m release clause and that is a significant outlay. With the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, both sides may decide against making a formal approach.
