Despite the fact that the stadiums are empty, the matchday revenues are down and the uncertainty of the post-lockdown world continues to dominate the 2020-21 Premier League campaign, the summer transfer window is once again well on its way to smashing all manner of records with some of the most mouth-watering fees ever seen in the game.
With such mouth-watering fees comes a huge amount of pressure however, and it’s never been harder for new faces to make the kinds of impressions that the modern fan or pundit demands. Nevertheless, here are three of the top signings we’re backing to justify the hype and prove they really are amongst the best signings we’re likely to see this year.
Thiago - Liverpool
Pep Guardiola famously remarked that the only condition to him joining up with Bayern Munich was if they could guarantee the signing of Thiago Alcantara from his former club Barcelona. The La Masia graduate might have been badly undervalued by the Catalans during his stay in Spain, however there’s no denying the fact that Liverpool have picked up probably the best deep-lying midfielder in European football right now.
Having played with Bayern Munich since the 2013-14 (and winning the league over the course of every single one of his campaigns with the Bavarians), Thiago established himself as one of the most silky midfielders of his generation. Competent moving the ball forward, the playmaking creativity behind him is easily the thing Jurgen Klopp’s midfield of trio has been missing out on over the years.
A different option to the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Giorgino Wijnaldum, Thiago is guaranteed plenty of playtime and will have the freedom to be the go-to creator from the middle of the pitch as Liverpool muster up their first ever Premier League title defence.
Sergio Reguillon - Tottenham Hotspur
Gareth Bale breaking out of his shackles at the Bernabeau and returning to North London might have been the bigger story, but in Sergio Reguillon Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham might have just solved one of their biggest problem areas.
Easily amongst the world’s best left backs, it seems baffling that Zinedine Zidane would wave Reguillon away in favour of keeping an aging Marcelo around, but that’s definitely what has happened here. Just 23 years of age, he already has over 150 first class appearances to his name and was probably the one bright spark of Real Madrid's 2018-19 campaign after turning out 22 times.
The one time future of Real, he comes in as an automatic first choice ahead of the likes of Ben Davies and Danny Rose (who is already halfway out the door as this article is being written) and will provide a similar sort of threat as Matt Doherty does on the right hand side for Spurs.
Timo Werner - Chelsea
Already established as the future of German football going forward, there’s plenty of reasons as to why Timo Werner might just be the key in turning Chelsea from Champions League qualifiers to outright favourites in the

Powerful, fast and more than a competent dribbler in possession, Werner is arguably the greatest example of what a modern day striker should look like. Pursued by seemingly every club in Europe at one time, he has registered over twenty goals in three of his past four seasons at RB Leipzig and his thirty-four in forty-five appearances in all competitions last year was a testament to his growing abilities.
At just £45 million, it’s frightening to think of the value Chelsea are scooping up with the 24 year old just about to stride into his prime and with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech all waiting to link up behind him.
