Matthaus: my past hampers me

Matthaus: my past hampers me

15 April 2008 - 20:54

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has blamed his lifetime affinity with Bayern Munich as the reason for his inability to get a job for a club in the Bundesliga. Matthaus has just taken charge of Maccabi Netanya in Israel - his sixth post in a short managerial career.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • "I have got to live with the fact there is a rivalry between the Bundesliga and FC Bayern, whichever club it is," said Matthaus.

"The name Lothar Matthaus falls in the same breath as FC Bayern, and Nurnberg and Frankfurt both noticed that and there was always a small group of fans who blocked my appointment.

"You are treated differently to other coaches.

"Over the last five years, many Bundesliga clubs have been searching for a new coach, but maybe the level of faith in me in Germany is not there."
