Arsenal have confirmed that David Luiz has undergone a minor knee surgery which will keep him on the sidelines for a while.

  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • The Gunners recently suffered an embarrassing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Luiz was unavailable for selection due to a knee complaint, and he has now undergone an operation to sort the concern.

There were initial fears that he could miss the rest of the season, but the club have revealed that he will return to action in the coming weeks.

"The procedure has been a success and David is now back at home rehabilitating," a statement on the club's official website read.

"He will be able to return to daily support and recovery with our medical team at the training centre in the coming days.

"David is expected to be back to full fitness and available for selection in the upcoming weeks."

Luiz has been a solid presence at the back for the Gunners in recent months, and his absence is a definite miss.

The north London club host Slavia Prague in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.

They will need to produce a much better showing than on Saturday to boost their prospects of reaching the last four of the competition.
