Should Manchester United sell wantaway star in January?

12 November 2021 - 16:26

Paul Pogba has been a mercurial talent throughout his career to date, and seemingly always will be. Capable of veering wildly between the sublime and the ridiculous, few players boast his ability to amaze and frustrate in equal measure.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Manchester United had hoped to be the ones to bring consistency out of the Frenchman, allowing him to cement a standing among the global elite on the back of a record-breaking transfer in 2016. Unfortunately, there remain as many questions as answers when it comes to the enigmatic midfielder. The biggest of those at present focuses on Pogba’s future. United have some tough decisions approaching on and off the field, with talk of change continuing to hang in the air over Old Trafford.

According to outright football markets at present, odds on the next Premiership manager to leave have Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sat at the top of an unwanted chart, with the Norwegian currently priced at 4/9 to be relieved of his duties in the dugout. That standing is a reflection of the inconsistency that has plagued an ambitious outfit for longer than many care to remember. For all of the investment in superstar talent, the most decorated side in English football has been unable to get itself back on the trophy trail.

Solskjaer may be about to pay the price for that, with Pogba in line to follow him through the exits. Another window of opportunity is about to swing open and United could start to push a few unwanted assets through it.

    Should Pogba be sold?

Speculation regarding a move away from Manchester for Pogba is nothing new, but there is more substance to it now. That is because he continues to work on a contract that will expire in the summer of 2022. If no fresh terms are agreed, or no sale is sanctioned, then a World Cup winner will depart as a free agent at the end of the season. United will be reluctant to see a proven performer at the highest level walk away for nothing.

There has been much talk of the Red Devils opening themselves up to offers, with the Daily Star claiming that losses will be cut in the new year while a fee can still be generated. That approach would appear to make sense for all concerned. United are desperate to end a five-year wait for tangible success in the current campaign and need as many supposedly world-class performers as possible to aid that cause. Patience is, however, wearing thin with Pogba.

Solskjaer is hardly short on creativity and energy in his engine room: inevitably, any change in the dugout would see a new coach inherit a squad brimming with potential match-winners. Do Premier League heavyweights need to be hanging on to a performer that is not guaranteed to start and may no longer be fully committed to the cause?

If a buyer can be found for Pogba, then it may be best to cash in. He has been a distraction, for both good and bad, throughout the second stint in English football and the time has come for the Red Devils to remove that and narrow collective focus.
