Liverpool reportedly rejected the chance to re-sign Raheem Sterling before his move to Chelsea.
The England international recently became Chelsea's first signing of the transfer window after arriving from Manchester City.
The Blues paid around £45 million to the reigning English champions, but it appears they were not his first preference this summer.
According to journalist Jacques Talbot, Sterling preferred to rejoin Liverpool, but the Reds had no plans of re-signing him.
The decision has now benefited Chelsea in landing his signature. They will be aiming to make the best use of his services.
Sterling can play out wide or as the main striker. Blues manager Thomas Tuchel sees him as a potential number nine next term.
The 27-year-old was in-and-out of the line-up at City, but should be guaranteed 90 minutes most of the times at Chelsea.
Sterling is currently with Chelsea in their pre-season tour of USA. He could feature against Charlotte FC or Arsenal next week.
