Man Utd wanted to sign Timo Werner

Werner snubbed United for Leipzig return

Man Utd wanted to sign Timo Werner

10 August 2022 - 21:08

Manchester United were keen on signing Timo Werner before he returned to Leipzig from Chelsea, Christian Falk reports.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The German had a difficult second campaign with the Blues, registering just 11 goals and six assists across all competitions.

Amidst this, he also had a fall-out with manager Thomas Tuchel, and it became quite clear that he would leave the club soon.

Leipzig confirmed yesterday that they had re-signed Werner on a permanent deal, but it seems United were also interested.

According to Falk, United made an approach to land Werner with manager Erik ten Hag believing that he would suit his system.

However, a move failed to materialise. Werner had already made the decision to return to Leipzig when the offer arrived.

The 26-year-old is Leipzig's all-time top scorer with 95 goals. He was simply superb for them between 2016 and 2020.

Werner will be aiming to revive his career at the Bundesliga outfit such that he can find peak form ahead of the winter World Cup.
