Manchester United have deployed scouts to monitor the progress of 22-year-old centre-back Caleb Okoli, currently playing for Atalanta in Serie A. The Italian under-21 international is wanted at Old Trafford as defensive cover, despite Harry Maguire's failed Old Trafford departure.
Erik Ten Hag had wanted Maguire to leave Man Utd, but ultimately a deal could not be agreed between West Ham and his current club. Subsequently, it looks as if Harry will be required for another season on the bench.
In Okoli, United want to sign one of Europe's best young defenders. Okoli has only really emerged into Atalanta's starting XI in recent times, but had two spells on loan at Cremonese and SPAL, both of which were successful.
It is understood that United will follow up their move for Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta with another raid on the same club for Okoli, after the clubs forged an excellent relationship during negotiations for the Danish striker.
Okoli was born in Italy, and is of Nigerian descent. He has previously suggested that it is his dream to play for Italy's full national side, and a move to the Premier League will certainly give him the visibility that will help his national team chances.
